Is Laser Eye Surgery Painful

A common question from all pre-surgery patients is whether laser eye surgery is painful or not. Laser eye surgery is an elective procedure and one of the most common carried out in the world. There are many questions which are asked pre-surgery and it is important that you ask as many questions during your consultation as you can. In short, there is no pain associated with this type of elective procedure.

A patient may experience minor discomfort as it is an intrusive procedure. It is not root canal or having your tonsils removed. The procedure is carried out while you are awake and this is what causes the main concern. The instruments which are used to carry out the procedure have always been safe and have come on in leaps and bounds over the past 20 years.

Patients will not experience any pain but may experience some of the complications below::
  • Dry eyes
  • Halos or starbursts at night early after surgery due to the dryness
  • Light sensitivity due to dryness
  • The need for fine-tuning after surgery
Most of these issues will resolve themselves over time as your eye continues to heal.
