The Food and Drug Administration has issued notice to LASIK professionals this week informing them that they have 90 days to update promotional materials that are making false claims about the safety of the popular Laser Eye Surgery treatment.
"It's about the false claims and not adequately providing consumers with information about the risks associated with the procedure," said Erica Jefferson, FDA spokeswoman [Quote from Health Day]
Laser Eye Surgery does have small risks attached to it such as vision loss, double vision and glare.
Furthermore, people with thin or irregular corneas, eye diseases such as dry eye or glaucoma, or cataracts for example are not good candidates for LASIK.
These changes are welcomed, as it highlights the need for those who are seeking to find a LASIK / Laser Eye Surgeon to not be fooled by false safety claims at consultation. This is a very good thing for the industry, and will be welcomed by potential patients and excellent surgeons.
In the United States it is important to ensure that the physician is certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
